Strong leadership is the magic that makes companies successful. It is something far more comprehensive than simply delegating from the top down and making demands on people junior to you in the food chain. And while good leadership principles apply from the copy room to the Board Room, senior leaders especially serves as beacons, as role models for your corporate culture, and as stewards of your company's core values. Leadership is a learned skill, not a genetic predisposition. True leaders know certain basic truths that make them outpace others. They know such important truths as:
Strong leaders:
- Praise in public and chastise private
- Listen with an open mind before speaking with an open mouth
- Acknowledge good work and extra effort with genuine praise
- Applaud open and truthful communication even if it's not what you want to hear
- Promote teamwork and team spirit
- Make life better, not needlessly harder, for their staff
Weak leaders:
- Make demands without explaining the spirit or broader reasons behind them
- Lead in the negative. Don't do this, don't do that. They are "be nos." There will be no tardiness; there will be no this and be no that. They stress the negative and ignore the positive.
- Destroy loyalty and dedication by failing to understand the struggles and motivation of people that work for them
- Horde knowledge and withhold praise
